How to Measure a Kilt Correctly
Getting the right kilt size is easy if you measure correctly. A kilt is not the same size as jeans or trousers. Traditional Scottish kilts are worn much higher on the body, around the navel, so using your trouser size can result in an incorrect fit.
Why Kilt Sizing Is Different
Unlike trousers, a kilt sits at your natural waist (navel). Measuring at this point ensures the kilt fits comfortably and hangs correctly.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape
- Someone to help (recommended)
- Light clothing
Step 1: Measure Your Waist
Wrap the measuring tape around your navel (belly button).
- Keep the tape level all the way around.
- Do not pull it too tight or leave it too loose.
- Breathe normally while measuring.
Important: Never order your kilt using your jeans or trouser size. Always measure at the navel.
Step 2: Measure the Kilt Length
Stand up straight.
Measure from your navel down to the middle of your kneecap.
This is the correct way to measure the length of a traditional Scottish kilt.
Standard Kilt Length
Our standard men's kilt length is 24 inches, which fits most customers of average height.
If you are shorter, taller, or prefer a different fit, we can also make your kilt in a custom length.
Common Measuring Mistakes
- Using your trouser or jean size
- Measuring around the hips instead of the navel
- Pulling the tape too tightly
- Guessing your measurements instead of using a tape measure
Kilt Fit Guide
A properly fitted kilt should:
- Sit comfortably at the navel
- Reach the middle of the kneecap
- Allow comfortable movement
- Hang naturally with the pleats at the back
